Veg on the Verge

What to plant on the verge?

The verge is the space between the footpath and the road, sometimes called the ‘Nature Strip'. It is usually grassed and often quite weedy unless you have looked after it well.

Replacing the grass or weed pit with native plants is a smart move.Native plants need much less water than grasses and European plants.Choosing the right natives for your space and soil type will also help with the low maintenance, bare patches and weedy sections.

Ideally you have no power lines above, but if you do, you need to restrict the height of any trees you may want. You may only be able to plant a shrub to 5 metres for example.

The plans (on the pdf) is for a verge 5 metres long and approximately 1metre wide. Each quadrant represents 1m and each pattern example can be shortened or lengthened to suit.

Your chosen plants should not be planted too close to the edge and cause a trip hazard for pedestrians.
