TIN's Species List

Trees in Newcastle (TIN) provides a variety of different services to the community as well as to the business and government sectors. We supply local native plant stock, bushland regeneration and planting services, educational workshops and programs, and a community volunteer program.

Experienced staff, in conjunction with the high-energy input of our volunteers, undertake the running of the TIN nursery. Additionally, we are able to train and educate our volunteers in a diverse range of horticultural and environmental practices. Our nursery provides services and experience in:
· seed collection, sorting, cleaning and storage
· propagation techniques such as seed sowing, cuttings and division
· "potting up"
· weed control
· fertilizer application
· general nursery duties.

TIN aims to provide high quality locally sourced tubestock for both large- and small-scale local regeneration and vegetation activities. Staff are also able to provide guidance and advice in relation to species selection and planting techniques for individual sites and specific projects.

Regular seed collection from a variety of locations allows us to produce plants from the different vegetation community types of the Lower Hunter region including coastal, wet and dry sclerophyll forest, rainforest, riparian, grassland and wetland communities. We collect seed from a diversity of plant types ranging from grasses to climbers, herbs, shrubs and trees.

Undertaking the best environmental practices TIN has adopted the 'Florabank' industry guidelines "Supporting ethical & sustainable seed collecting techniques". Information gained from the collection of seed such as seeding times and seed availability at different locations is then recorded in our data- bases.

Our species list indicates our most commonly propagated and sought after native plants in the area. In addition to our standard stock we do, however, endeavour to periodically provide a larger selection of locally indigenous plants with an emphasis placed on those "hard to get" species.

Generally it is advisable that if species other than those on the standard list are wanted or site-specific seed stock is a requirement, then an advanced order may be the best option. By placing an advanced order for plants it not only helps us to produce seedlings of a beneficial planting size but also allows site-specific seed stock to be produced, providing for genetic integrity to match your site. One final benefit of placing an advanced order of 3 to 6 months (or more) is the discounted price you'll receive - it's worth planning ahead!
