Coastcaring along Newcastle's coastline

Tuesday & Thursday

Leave at 9am from TIN

Do you have energy to burn? Maybe it’s about the coastal environment you want to learn? TIN volunteers regularly go Coastcaring along Newcastle’s spectacular coastline to King Edward Park, Shepherds Hill, Merewether Beach and Burwood Beach throughout the year. The bus leaves from TIN at 9am.
Coastcaring is physical work but the personal satisfaction and the views are tremendous. It’s a great way to learn about bush regeneration and what it takes to look after a Threatened Ecological Community, the Themda Grasslands on the seacliffs and our coastal vegetation. If you’re interested then pop in for an induction and book a seat on the bus. Volunteer inductions happen every Wednesday at 10am to give you an overview of the organisation and the OH & S issues at TIN.

Volunteer inductions

Wednesday

Volunteer inductions happen every Wednesday at 10am at TIN to give you an overview of the organisation and the OH & S issues involved with the various TIN activities. To participate in any TIN activity (except Sunday Landcaring) you need to do the induction.

Seed Collecting and Bushland Awareness

Friday

Leave at 9am from TIN

Feel like a structured stroll in some beautiful bushland? Volunteers and a Seed Collection supervisor from Trees in Newcastle go seed collecting every Friday in some of the best bits of bush in the Lower Hunter. If you would like to learn about seed in all of its glorious shapes and stages, learn about the bushland in bloom and contribute to the Lower Hunter Region Community Seedbank, then pop in for an induction and book a seat on the bus.

At TIN we collect seed to contribute to the Lower Hunter Region Community Seedbank as part of a region wide strategy to help protect the long term survival of our native plants in the Lower Hunter. In the process we learn a lot about the bushland.

Plants can’t move, so if the land they grow upon is targeted for increased urbanisation, mining or agriculture, the plants and the seed stored in the soil can be lost forever. For rare and threatened species, extinction is a real possibility. For common plants, fragmentation of the population can mean that small isolated patches of plants can no longer carry on, their diversity is diminished and their ability to survive drought and disease is weakened.
The regional seed bank is our local plant’s insurance policy. It is a way to help guarantee the future survival of our regional flora by collecting and storing local native seeds.

Whilst we’re out in the bushland we learn about many aspects of the local plants and animals. We collect information about what the plants are doing, when they flower and when they set seed. This information contributes to a bank of knowledge that can help support planning for regeneration and restoration projects within the Lower Hunter.

Landcaring

2nd Sunday of the Month 10am-noon

Summer Landcaring at Merewether Beach near Swells. Winter Landcaring at the University of Newcastle,
under the bridge down from the Engineering Building Merewether Beach is a well loved stretch of the local coastline. Once upon a time there was only Bitou Bush on the dunes but now thanks to the efforts of several local coastcare groups native vegetation is once again holding the dunes in place. The main task we tackle is the ongoing replacement of local weeds such as Gazania and Bitou Bush with local coastal native plants.

Our long term aim is to improve the local environment of the Lower Hunter region through bush regeneration and the protection and propagation of local native plants.

TIN strives to increase the community’s ability to look after the coast by sharing bush regeneration expertise and educating who ever wants to learn about local native plants communities, weed identification and the best ways to deal with weedy worries.
